Continuing Ed . . .

The GDS team invites you to join us for one or more of our adult classes. Relax, enjoy yourself, and learn something, not because you have to but because you want to. Our Adult Classes are for learners age 18 to 118, so whether you’re a young adult or young at heart, come back to school and explore a book, ponder a new theory, and enjoy stimulating conversation—just because it makes you happy.

  • Mind and Matter with GDS English Teacher John Burghardt

Explore various philosophical texts while focusing on the question of how well our minds capture "reality" with GDS English Teacher John Burghardt starting this December.
In this year's Saturday classes we will be working through a sequence of very influential philosophical texts by Plato, Descartes, Hume, Kant and Wittgenstein, focusing on the question of how well our minds can capture "reality" in scare quotes.  The nets we throw in order to capture this beast have two kinds of lacing, mathematical and linguistic.  I won't ask you to actually do any math, but we'll skim  a book by Ernest Nagel on Kurt Gödel's "Incompleteness Theorems"  that shows why there's still a strong strain of Platonism among mathematicians, and we'll read a book by Stephen Pinker that reinforces Wittgenstein's notion that grammar, of all things, takes us to deepest structures -- the jousts, beams, and cement foundations -- of the world as we know it. Finally, we'll work our way back from these these aethereal inquiries to the questions that swarm on the page like midges every time we open newspapers:  Is there any truth to tell?  How can we bring that truth to bear in any conversation with the spin-masters?
