Debate Team Dominates in December

All teams emerged with wins at last week’s New York tournament.
The GDS Policy Debate Team had a fantastic weekend in suburban New York at all levels of competition. Squad captains Tara Bhagat '19 and Robin Forsyth '19 won the Mamaroneck High School tournament on an undefeated 10-0 rampage and were identified as the 7th and 8th individual speakers overall. Sophomores Matt Mason and Nathan Wohlstadter did double duty, advancing to the octafinals (Sweet 16) of the varsity division as well as making the finals of the JV breakout bracket. Ninth grader Lyra Gemmill-Nexon (daughter of GDS debate team alum Daniel Nexon ’91) won 5th individual speaker in the novice division at her first tournament competition.

The GDS Debate Squad fielded their largest contingent this weekend for the New York Fall Face-Off in Westchester, NY. Six GDS teams competed (three varsity and three novice) for a total of 12 GDS debaters, including students debating for their first time at the High School level. All teams emerged with wins, and the mutual support of the team produced an outstanding showing across the board.

Ultimately, GDS brought home the championship trophey for varsity—delivered by the seniors team Bhagat/Forsyth! They also qualified for the season end Tournament of Champions in April 2019 and received Outstanding Speaker Awards as the #6 and #7 speakers (out of a field of 118 speakers).

A remarkable weekend for the kids from Tenleytown and their fearless leader, jon sharp. Go Hoppers!
