Part One of a new series following the Middle School fall musical from day one to curtain calls.

The Middle School fall musical represents a wild, sprint-to-the-finish collaboration between drama, dance, art, and music culminating in several jaw-dropping performances before Thanksgiving. More than 40 Middle School students are involved. Only three weeks into the fall semester, casting has wrapped. Props and sets are already under construction.

On Monday afternoon, while dance teacher Felipe reviewed a section of choreography downstage, Wesley Brubaker ’23 and Ava Blum ’23 organized their props and discussed their roles as The Baker and The Baker’s Wife in the still-under-construction bakery to stage left.

“We desperately need a child,” Ava explained. ”Our family was cursed by a witch to always be a childless one.” Then, almost as an afterthought, Ava spoke with the kind of attentiveness that we treasure at Georgetown Day School. “’It’s our determination that drives the story and brings all the different storylines together.”

Ava‘s words, in turn, speak to the leadership of the teaching team of Brooke Houghton, Keith Hudspeth, and Felipe Moltedo. While running through the stage blocking for actors, they talked about intentions and motivations. They invited students to take responsibility for aspects of their roles whether center stage or backstage.

Across the hallway, art teacher Susan Mols supports crew members as they prepare set pieces. Even here in the studio, Susan and the students are mindful of how their work relates to all the other aspects of the show, for instance students add a bit of blue paint “to nurture” rather than absorb the light. “We have to think about how the gels in the stage lighting will reflect off the scenery,” said Susan.

Ava peeked in during a break in cast rehearsal. “Everything looks so amazing in here!” she exclaimed, admiring especially the mobile cow the students had built.

The musical affords the opportunity for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to collaborate and for students with diverse interests to put on a show together.
