Immigration Project

Third grade students research the stories of first-generation immigrant GDS staff members.
For weeks, students in 3rd grade classrooms have been making connections to immigrants who are enriching the Georgetown Day School community. Now in its sixth year, the 3rd grade Immigration Project celebrates the stories of first-generation immigrants who work at GDS. Students interview teachers and non-teaching staff members, and then they research their countries of origin and produce visual and expository pieces about their journeys.

To celebrate their completed projects—and the staff stories that inspired them—students participate in a well-loved luncheon. Parents and staff are invited to this culminating event during which students proudly present their work and share foods treasured by—or traditional in—the countries they studied.

This year, students interviewed the following selection of staff members:
  • Pre-K/Kindergarten teacher Angela Sandford (England)
  • Lower/Middle School world languages department chair Aicha Kacen (Tunisia)
  • Lower/Middle School Chinese teacher Yi-Na Chung (Taiwan)
  • Lower/Middle School librarian Kay Miller (Hong Kong)
  • Lower/Middle School physical education teacher William Miezan (Côte d'Ivoire)
  • 2nd grade teacher Sasha Shahidinejad (El Salvador)
  • Lower/Middle School Spanish teacher Victor Vazquez-Vincent (Spain)
  • Lower/Middle School Spanish teacher Johanne Chévere (Dominican Republic)
  • Lower/Middle School French teacher Selma Aniba (Tunisia)
  • High School technology specialist Tuan Nguyen (Vietnam)
