From Chicks to Painted Ladies

Interdisciplinary study in PK/K
Less fluffy but at least as fascinating, Pre-K/kindergarten has recently swapped their baby chicks for painted lady caterpillars in the classroom.

The interdisciplinary lifecycle study of the butterflies commonly known as thistle butterflies wisely engages students in a great variety of learning experiences. As expected, students have kept an observation journal in which they learn to draw their caterpillars in proportion to the size of the jar. (“It got so much bigger over the weekend!”) The Pre-K/kindergarten students have also learned to use descriptive language as they write about the size, colors, and shape of the caterpillar using invented spelling. They observe caterpillar anatomy and sing songs—with hand signals—about the impending metamorphosis.

And the chicks? They are settling in with other Pre-K/kindergarten alumni chicks down on LMS maintenance team member Ron Nahr’s farm. Before they left, students benefited from math that truly mattered: count the eggs, count down the incubation days until they hatch, count how many hatched, compare the number hatched to the number unhatched, calculate the hatch rate for—okay, not quite yet.

Life sciences at GDS are more than simply an exploration of our natural world. They are also a study in the skills and concepts critical in the life of a child.
