Big Wins for Math

The GDS Middle School math team wins another regional competition!
The GDS Middle School math team continues to dominate with a series of big wins. First, they won with the only perfect score (24/24) at the Independent School Mathematics Association of Washington (ISMAW) math meet. Then, at the Mathcounts 2019 Chapter Competition, the team of Ashok Tate ’23, Shiv Raman ’23, Max Froomkin ’24, and Max Wang ’23 won the grand trophy.

“One reason we were so successful was we each brought a different set of skills and experiences to the problem solving,” explained Shiv. “Ashok is our team leader and helped us divvy up the problems and decide which we each wanted to do.”

“There are 10 problems to solve—mostly word problems and geometry,” Ashok added. “We divide up the team, working in opposite directions, in order to get two answers for each problem as we go.”

Ashok also finished second in the individual competition.

Congratulations math team and our medalists in particular!
