Summer Jazz Tour

GDS Musicians Immersed in Jazz Life
The GDS Jazz’s Spaces and Places Tour 2018 barrels along in the “Mystery Machine” on their 13-day, 13-gig eastern U.S. tour. You can keep up with their adventures from bridge to break on their blog. From 70-person shows in blazing, tune-torching heat to barely-dinner-bill-covering gigs, these GDS musicians’ immersion in jazz life is thrilling to follow.

The blog reads like a jazz hocket: a cross-talk of various improvising voices, including visits to music shops and piano repair warehouses, guitar standards on the patio, flips into freezing lakes, and “Cheek to Cheek” duets on stage. For those more gastronomically inclined, you’ll read about Nutella pancake balls, ramen noodles, and throat-soothing ice cream.

Playing alongside mentor Brad Linde’s Team Players, of dual-saxophone fame, the students have plenty more to deliver. We hope you can catch up with them on tour––next stop: Betty’s Grill in Nashville tonight––or at the very least, find them on Instagram. They deserve heaps more than their “ten” followers.

“This is why we love GDS!” says Elizabeth Carmen, parent to bassist Alex Carmen ‘19. “Where else would the faculty take the time and responsibility to plan and lead a real summer jazz tour around the eastern U.S. with his students? Alex’s passion, creativity, innovative spirit and personal responsibility all have been stoked by GDS and nowhere has that been more evident than Brad Linde’s summer roll out of the Xander Davies Quartet.”
