Extended Day Program General Team Member

Georgetown Day School’s (GDS) Office of Auxiliary Programs seeks staff to become part of its extended day program team for school year 2019-2020.
GDS Auxiliary Programs Mission:  While participating in GDS Auxiliary Programs, children will explore, learn, and create through hands-on and interpersonal inquiry, gaining an appreciation for themselves, others, and the world. GDS Auxiliary Programs Team Members teach new skills and provide tools that enable children to develop into great people who strive to learn and understand, try new things, and care for others.
Position Description:  GDS seeks to hire several general After-School Program team members to support day-to-day programming. We seek individuals with experience working with elementary and middle school–aged children (ages 4–13) who are prepared to challenge students academically, physically, and artistically and to establish authentic relationships with the children in the extended-day program. The ability to provide rich, mission-aligned content and creative pedagogy, to establish authentic relationships, to work collaboratively with colleagues, and to place children’s interests and experiences at the heart of the classroom are essential components of the job. These team members will also plan weekly special activities to pique our students’ interests in a variety of ways.  As a diverse, inclusive school devoted to preparing our students to live and work in an increasingly globalized and multicultural society, GDS is particularly interested in professionals with demonstrated interest and experience in working in such a school setting.

This position reports to the GDS 360 Extended Day Program Director.

Responsibilities may include the following:
 ·  Supervise an activity with an assigned GDS 360 drop-in class for a particular age group
 ·  Prepare and supervise snack, being aware of food allergies
 ·  Supervise and facilitate free-choice activities and recess
 ·  Support enrichment classes
 ·  If assigned, work at the front desk and/or supervise children riding the Hop2It afternoon bus
 ·  Develop weekly lesson plans for free-choice classes, including submission of material requests, etc. 
 ·  Ensure that students are learning in creative, hands-on, interactive, and age-appropriate ways
 ·  Incorporate opportunities for students to collaborate, problem-solve, and create
 ·  Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
 ·  After School Program or Summer Camp work experience, or other equivalent professional experience working with children, Bachelor’s degree in education and/or 90 Hour Child Care Certification preferred but not required
 ·  Previous teaching experience 
 ·  Ability to think on one’s feet
 ·  Ability to work collaboratively
 ·  Must enjoy working with children and demonstrate good judgement in doing so
 ·  Patience and a sense of humor
Sample Daily Schedule and Expectations:
2:30-3:00: Arrive, check email, gather supplies, read announcements
3:00-3:30: Supervise recess
3:30-4:45: Supervise and implement activities for an assigned group of students and provide snack to the students. PK-2nd graders will engage in a mix of free play and organized activities during “clubhouse time.” 3rd graders will participate in a 30-minute supervised homework time prior to engaging in a mix of free-play and organized activities. 4th-8th graders will be supervised during “homework center,” with active support provided to students. The team member is responsible for organizing the activities during clubhouse time and/or for supporting homework questions.
4:45-5:00: Supervise recess
5:00-5:45: Supervise an assigned free-choice station ranging from arts and crafts to sports to the playground to free reading in the library. Once a week organize and implement a free-choice elective class for 360 participants. The team member is responsible for providing organization in and of the free-choice stations.
5:45-6:00: Clean up; accompany remaining children to pick up spot; check in with 360 director 
Position Status
This is apart-time, hourly, non-exempt position with a desired start date around August 19 for staff training; the program begins in September.
2:30–6:00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays
1:45–6:00pm Wednesdays.
May not work as a substitute teacher or have GDS faculty afternoon duty on the same day as an after-school program commitment. Preference will be given to staff who can work 5 days a week.
Starts at $18/hour based on experience.
