Hopper Transportation Program

GDS has 10 morning and afternoon neighborhood bus routes. Our shuttles stop at 32 locations across the DMV, making the Hopper Shuttle a convenient way to get your students to and from campus each day. Families have the flexibility of choosing different routes and stops to fit their needs. Our shuttles are an affordable option: morning rides are $2, and afternoon rides are $6. Discounts are available for those on financial aid.

GDS is located in one of the most transit rich neighborhoods in DC. Conveniently located between the Tenleytown (0.25 miles) and Friendship Heights (0.5 miles) metro stations, both on the Red Line. 11 bus lines also service the area. 

DC residents can take advantage of the Kids Ride Free program, giving your student free public transit. For our students in MD and VA, we offer a subsidized transit program ($35 for $100 of Metro fare) that makes public transit a safe, reliable, and cost-effective way to reach campus.

GDS offers facilities for students and staff who walk, cycle, scooter, etc. to campus. Both our HS and LMS garages have bike racks near the entrance to the buildings, as well as surface racks in front of our LMS building. GDS recommends that a secure lock, such as a U-Lock, be used to secure microtransit vehicles to bike racks. Forgot your lock? No problem! Our security team has extra locks that they can loan you for the day to keep your microtransit vehicle secure. 

As a condition of our zoning agreement, GDS has committed to reducing vehicular trips on campus, which we demonstrate by conducting routine trip counts and reporting results in the fall of each year. As such, there is a morning carpool requirement for all vehicles coming to campus between 7:45 and 8:45 AM. A carpool is at least two GDS students exiting the vehicle.

While there is no requirement in the afternoon, we encourage you to explore group travel or alternate means of transportation in the afternoon between 3:00 and 7:00 PM. To help facilitate group travel, we will send group travel matches each year in your sustainable commute plan and are always happy to provide more names if needed.
