  • Urinetown, the Musical

From humble beginnings in the NYC fringe festival to off Broadway to winner of the ’02 Tony for book of a musical and original score to a two-year run on Broadway, this homage to and spoof of Brechtian theater of outrage and provocation defies description. The title is emblematic, thumb-in-the-eye unpleasant, eliciting an automatic question: Are you kidding? To which the answer is yes and no.

This uproarious musical is a tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a water shortage caused by a 20-year drought leads to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. A hero emerges. He plans a revolution! Urinetown, the Musical is an irreverent satire, praised for reinventing the very notion of what a musical could be. A “comedic romp…with its outrageous perspective” and “wickedly modern wit…” Musical numbers spoof Broadway’s own—from love songs to gospel numbers, and a chase through the sewers. (What show? What show?)

Recommended for ages 10 and up. Running time is 2 hours, 10 minutes with intermission.
