Since 1976, National Black History Month has had an endorsed theme as a part of the celebration. For 2024, the theme is "African Americans and the Arts," spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, dance, theater, and cultural movements. This month’s spotlight features a small group of Black GDS Alumni who have used their artistic talents and skills to be agents of change to create, uplift, and inspire.

Introducing… Lesley Devrouax '93

Lesley is an artist, designer, and entrepreneur.

“From an early age, I found inspiration in the act of creation,” said Lesley, “Art has always been the lens through which I perceive the world, a medium where imagination knows no bounds and creativity reigns supreme.”

When reflecting on what drew her to the arts as a career and lifelong passion, Lesley said that “...creativity is not just something I do; it's who I am. The innate desire to bring beauty and meaning into existence has been a guiding force throughout my life's journey.”

Whether it is clothing design, painting, or entrepreneurship, the thread of artistic expression has woven its way through every endeavor Lesley has pursued. Fashion, with its ever-evolving trends and dynamic aesthetic landscape, provided the perfect canvas for her creative vision. At Calvin Klein, she was known for her keen sense of forecasting and trend anticipation, translating her artistic instincts into innovative designs that resonated with audiences worldwide.

Lesley left a tangible mark at Ralph Lauren (their best-selling pant is named for her), and eventually transitioned into painting.

“Navigating the art world in Washington has been exciting and fascinating to say the least,” said Lesley. “I’ve been privileged to work with amazing local and renowned artists as one of the founding members of ‘Superfierce,’ an arts organization of female artists paying it forward, and to have my works in the private collections of some of the most revered art collectors in the city as well as two pieces in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.”

GDS teachers who inspired Lesley include Laura Tolliver and Debbie Haynes. “These women provided a safe haven for creatives at GDS… Debbie and Laura allowed me to express myself freely and honestly within the walls of the art studio and for that I will be forever grateful.”
