How many students are enrolled at GDS?

Our vibrant community is comprised of 1,075 students, 575 in our Lower/Middle School and 500 in our High School.

What is the student-faculty ratio?

Student-faculty relationships are critical at GDS. To that end, we ensure that each of our students is supported through smaller classroom models and is offered plenty of time for one-on-one interaction.

  • Lower School: 6:1
  • Middle School: 7:1
  • High School: 8:1

In what grades does GDS admit new students?

Our primary entry grades are Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, 4th, 6th, and 9th. In addition to our entry years, we expand enrollment slightly in 1st and 3rd Grade. Students may be admitted into non-entry grades if space is available.

Does a student need to be a particular age to be considered for admission?

For admittance into Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, we require students to be age four and five, respectively, by September 1 of their enrollment year at GDS. For admittance into 1st Grade, we require students to be age six by September 1 of their enrollment year at GDS.

Do students wear uniforms at GDS?

The GDS dress code is informal, and intentionally so. We believe that students do their best work when they feel free to express themselves whether it be in classroom learning or in what they choose to wear to school.

Where is GDS located?

GDS is located at 4200 Davenport Street in the Tenleytown neighborhood of Washington, DC.

What are the hours of the school day?

In our Lower School, school hours are 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. for Pre-Kindergarten - 2nd Grade students and 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. for 3rd and 4th Grade students.
In our Middle School, the school day runs from 8:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
In our High School, the school day runs from 8:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.

Does GDS offer transportation?

Providing safe, affordable transportation to our families is critical to creating a supportive educational environment. GDS has a number of bus routes. Learn more about GDS transportation »

Does GDS offer extended day programs?

Yes! Our extended day program provides a space before and after school where LMS students can build community among their peers, participate in classes that extend and complement their school day, and engage in activities which deepen their understanding of self and the world around them.

Our free Early Grasshopper Program operates daily at the LMS from 7:00–7:45 a.m. GDS 360 operates daily at the LMS from the end of classes until 6:30 p.m.

Georgetown Day School is a coed, preK-12, non-sectarian private school in Washington, DC with small class sizes and a diverse school community. Our comprehensive, progressive curriculum is known for experiential and hands-on learning, college-prep level math and STEM courses, and innovative programming. GDS teachers focus on providing an individualized education for each child, from elementary grades through high school. The school’s performing arts program includes theater, dance, and music. The athletics program offers competitive sports for student athletes, including cross-country, track, soccer, lacrosse, and crew/rowing. With our strong commitment to financial aid, an independent school tuition is affordable.
