PSA presents: MLK Day of Service
Dani Seiss

For two weekends in January, a community of over one hundred GDS faculty, staff, students and families volunteered with GDS CARES to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to provide charitable services to five local nonprofits, including DC Central Kitchen, Little Falls Watershed Alliance, Here2Help, A Wider Circle, and Homes Not Borders.

Volunteers donated and prepped toys and games, cleaned up trash and invasive plant species around Little Falls Parkway, set up—during a snowstorm!—an apartment’s worth of furnishings for an Afghan refugee family of six, and gave out groceries to families in need.

At DC Central Kitchen, they chopped 25 cases of butternut squash, cooked 20 commercial sheet pans of sweet potatoes, assembled and boxed over 1,500 meals and made over 1,200 sandwiches!
