Meet Shawn Miller!

Primary Role(s): Associate Director of College Counseling and Head Coach for the GDS Baseball Program

Years at GDS: Finishing up my second year at GDS. 

 

What do you love about GDS?
I really value and appreciate my colleagues across the faculty and staff in the High School. 

Why do you do your job?
I value the opportunity to provide for others what I did not have, whether that’s in my role as a college counselor, as the head coach of our baseball program, or through my efforts with our It’s Academic, History Bowl, and Quiz Bowl groups. I also love learning more about our community and helping support our students expand on a path they hope to pursue! 

A favorite part of your job?
For college counseling, the excitement when a student finally gets to hit submit on their application! For baseball, I love when it “clicks” for players and they find success through their efforts in practice and cages. Finally, for our It’s Academic, History Bowl, and Quiz Bowl groups, I value seeing how well the entire team works together and flows after each question. 

Your work style in a few words?
Attentive, patient, and always willing to help. 

A top hope/wish for your students and/or colleagues?
For students, enjoy their time at GDS to the fullest!  

Personal passions/hobbies/pastimes?
I like watching movies and television shows, reading as much as I can during the summer and winter breaks, and developing short stories and scripts. 

A few favorites…?
Favorite recipes: I make a decent Hawaiian Macaroni Salad! 
Favorite movies: Lost in Translation, Hot Fuzz, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. 
Favorite band: Tie between Father John Misty, Lord Huron, The Killers, and Brandi Carlile.
Favorite countries I’ve traveled to:
Ireland and the Netherlands  

Tell us about your family and/or pet(s).
Caitlin Miller (Wife), Indiana Jones Miller (Dog), and Poppy Belle Miller (Cat) make up the D.C. Miller Fam! 

One thing about yourself that your students/colleagues/others probably don't know?
I used to do stand-up comedy in high school and college!

If you happen to have a bucket list, one thing on your life bucket list you've already accomplished?
I am a licensed wedding officiant and had the opportunity to officiate a wedding amongst the Dolomites this past September. 

Something on your life bucket list you have yet to accomplish?
Personal Bucket List: Attend the Hobbiton Evening Banquet Tour after my wife Caitlin runs the Middle Earth Halfling Marathon in New Zealand. Professional Bucket List: Break ground on a field for GDS Baseball.
