Primary Role: Lower and Middle School Visual Arts Teacher

Years at GDS: 14!!

What do you love about GDS?

I love how happy the students are, the freedom of expression I have as an art teacher, and the privilege of access to amazing resources we all have.

Why do you do your job? 

Jenn Heffernan

It’s fun, fulfilling and meaningful. It is literally the best job on the planet, although that is not to say it isn’t exhausting! 

A favorite part of your job?

When I am cutting clay and kids say “that looks soooo fun” and I tell them “yup, that’s why I became an art teacher.”

Personal passions/hobbies/pastimes?

Obviously I love art and making things. I most love spending time with my family. I love decorating every inch of our home and doing crafts, as well as learning art history; I also have a passion for reading and for music. 

Your work style in a few words?

Organized chaos.

A top hope/wish for your students and/or colleagues?

I think for my students, I wish that they can be the best versions of themselves, that they fulfill their potential—not just academically, but in who they are as human beings. 

Personal passions/hobbies/pastimes?

Obviously I love art and making things. I most love spending time with my family. I love decorating every inch of our home and doing crafts, as well as learning art history; I also have a passion for reading and for music.

Favorite recipes: Strawberry/banana smoothies in the morning
Favorite books: Neuromancer, Snow Crash
Favorite band: a few that come to mind, Depeche Mode, Chris & Cosey, and Boredoms
Favorite countries I’ve traveled to: Japan and Germany

Tell us about your family and/or pet(s).

I have always grown up with goofy golden retrievers and now have two very neurotic and naughty adopted pit mixes.

One thing about yourself your students/colleagues/others probably don't know?

I used to DJ and have a music collection of over 1,000 records, CDs, and cassettes.

One thing on your life "bucket list" you've already accomplished?

Going to Tokyo.

Something on your life “bucket list” you have yet to accomplish?

Going back to Japan with my daughter.
