As part of our ongoing series Meet Our GDS Faculty and Staff, we are excited to present: Meet Gary Cutler!
Read the Q&A below to learn more about Gary.
Primary Role: 5th Grade Science
Pronouns: he/him/his
Years at GDS: 27
What do you love about GDS?
I love the positive energy that I have always felt at GDS, both from teachers and students. When I first interviewed with Gloria Runyon and visited the school, it was what I noticed most and made me want to be a part of this community.
Why do you do your job?
I have always enjoyed working with young people. As a Zoology major in college, it seemed like a natural transition into education. I also believe that teaching students to think scientifically, answer questions, and solve problems like scientists is an important lifelong skill for future generations to have.

A favorite part of your job?
I enjoy having downtime with the students. I enjoy their company, especially when everybody is relaxed and just hanging out. It's at those times that you really get to know the kids and appreciate them as more than just students.
Your work style in a few words?
Barely Controlled Chaos
What is your top hope/wish for your students and/or colleagues?
I want my students to come away from their year in 5th grade science as better problem solvers and to accept failures as opportunities rather than negative outcomes.
What are your personal passions/hobbies/pastimes?
I cook a lot at home and build wooden model ships. I am currently working on the HMS Beagle, which was Darwin's ship as he sailed around the Galapagos Islands.
A few favorites…?
Favorite recipes: I am currently into anything Asian-inspired. I am making an authentic Ramen (Tonkotsu) broth. It's a full day's commitment to some serious simmering, pig trotters, and chicken parts. I also enjoy baking different kinds of bread.
Favorite movies: The Fifth Element, Pacific Rim
Favorite band: Little Feat, The Who
Favorite countries I’ve traveled to: Australia
My baby Frieda
Tell us about your family and/or pet(s).
I have 2 children; both went to The Lab School on MacArthur Blvd., and two dogs, both brown. One doesn't like me very much. And two cats; both too cool for school.
One thing about yourself your students/colleagues/others probably don't know?
I met my wife at GDS. She taught MS History and English when I was teaching science in the Lower School.
If you happen to have a bucket list, what is one thing on your life bucket list you've already accomplished?
I don't have a bucket list (yet). If I did, it would be to do a lot more traveling.
