What do you love about GDS?
The students! My colleagues!
Why do you do your job?
I am a historian, and I love learning about history and sharing that love with young people. I don’t just mean the stuff of history, though I love that, but also the way of thinking you develop as a historian.
A favorite part of your job?
Reading about history is still a favorite part of my job; working with students to help them better understand the reading is another favorite part; and helping students learn how to be effective writers is a third favorite part.
Your work style in a few words?
I work hard and constantly!!
A top hope/wish for your students and/or colleagues?
I hope my students learn to love history and continue to read (and think) about it for their whole lives.
Personal passions/hobbies/pastimes?
I used to have hobbies. I don’t have time for hobbies! But I do love running and exercising more generally. I always run a bunch of races throughout the year. I never win.
A few favorites…?
Favorite recipes: Marcella Hazan’s pesto, tomato sauce or lemon chicken. Anything by Marcella Hazan.
Favorite movie: Casablanca
Favorite band: I don’t have a favorite band; my musical tastes are too wide ranging for that. But I love Shovels and Rope, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Jason Isbell, Yola, Will Wood—I could really go on and on.
Favorite country I’ve traveled to: Italy
Tell us about your family and/or pet(s).
We have two dogs. Rocky and Anita.
One thing about yourself your students/colleagues/others probably don't know?
If they don’t know, I’ll never tell!
One thing on your life "bucket list" you've already accomplished?
Writing a book, I guess.
Something on your life “bucket list” you have yet to accomplish?
Writing a second book.
