As part of our ongoing series Meet Our GDS Faculty and Staff, we are excited to present: Meet Brooke Coleman!

Read the Q&A below to learn more about Brooke.

Primary Role: High School Math Teacher

Pronouns: she/her

Years at GDS: 12

What do you love about GDS?

It draws people (students, colleagues, and families) whose company I genuinely enjoy.

Why do you do your job?

It’s engaging, challenging, and fun.

A favorite part of your job?

Honestly, almost all of it. I love being in the classroom, brainstorming (and chatting) with colleagues, and just the overall process of strategizing the best way to teach a new topic.

Your work style in a few words?

I asked some of my students, and they said: organized, laid-back, and meets people where they are.

A top hope/wish for your students?

Ideally, they’d enjoy most of how they’re spending their time on any given day. And in the moments when they’re not actively enjoying it, they’d try to find small parts of it that they do.

Personal passions/hobbies/pastimes?

When I’m not hanging out with my family, I enjoy running, yoga, and playing in a Special Olympics Unified sports league. I realize most of you aren’t exactly flush with free time, but DC Special Olympics has a great Unified program with a variety of sports; if it piques your interest, it’s worth checking out.

A few favorites…
Favorite recipes: I just bought a pizza oven, so I’m on a quest to perfect my dough recipe.
Favorite movies: I’m pretty much only watching kids’ movies these days. So, rather than naming a favorite, I’ll say I enjoy any movie I take my kids to in a theater with reclining seats.
Favorite countries I’ve traveled to: Spain.

Tell us about your family and/or pet(s).
My partner, Jen, and I have two kids (George and Peter) and a dog named Beatrice. George and Peter love any excuse to come to a GDS activity or spend time on the playground here.

One thing about yourself that your students/colleagues/others probably don't know?

Something on your life bucket list you have yet to accomplish?
See the Northern Lights.
