Lower School MLK Assembly

Danny Stock

The traditional Lower School Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly, one of our five major assemblies each year, was split into two parts, each virtual, featuring the important work of the 1st and 5th grades. The 1st graders and their teachers Paula Young Shelton, Andrew Berman, Kelly Morris, and Unushe Walker produced a powerful and touching collection of protest songs and poems. We hope you'll take some time to watch the stirring clips.

The protest song "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody" was performed by the 1st grade with music by The Roots.

Two poems by Langston Hughes were performed by Paula Young Shelton's 1st graders.

Andrew Berman's 1st grade Seasharks present Facing the Challenge by Martin Luther King Jr.

Unushe Walker's 1st grade performs Erika Northrop's poem "In Memory."

First graders performed portions of the speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. during the March on Washington.

First graders performed We Shall Not Be Moved, music by Mary Mary. "Just like a tree standing by the water!"

Kelly Harris's 1st grade dolphins performed the poem "We Remember MLK," author unknown.
