When GDS third graders interview our first-generation immigrant faculty and staffers as part of the annual Immigration project, they gain powerful insights into the meaning of home, hope, and connection to place. The third grade has been researching and learning from the immigrants in our close community for nearly a decade, and telling their stories through creative posters that display details about their lives, backgrounds, and culture. Then they present their work in a celebratory luncheon for parents and staff.
As part of learning about and celebrating these cultures, the students all made traditional foods at home and attached photos of their dishes to their posters.
This year, they interviewed these faculty and staff members, and welcomed Sarah who is new to our community:
