Brave Spaces: Pre-K Library Class

Danny Stock
Finally, two of our new pre-kindergarten students found a much-needed mirror this week in Lower/Middle School librarian Kay Miller.

The students are Chinese, and Kay, who knew of their background, spoke to them in Chinese when they came for library class. “Their beaming smiles and repeated exclamations of ‘你是中國人, you are Chinese!,’ made me emotional,” Kay wrote. “I know first hand, as a student, how teacher representation can positively affect a student’s educational experience.” Later, the homeroom teacher told Kay that the first conversation Brian Liu ’32 initiated with her was to tell her of the connection. “She’s Chinese! She speaks Chinese!”
