75th Speaker Series Presents—System Error: Where Big Tech Went Wrong and How We Can Reboot

Danny Stock

System Error is a forward-thinking manifesto from three Stanford professors—experts who have worked at ground zero of the tech revolution for decades—which reveals how big tech’s obsession with optimization and efficiency has sacrificed fundamental human values and outlines steps we can take to change course, renew our democracy, and save ourselves.

Authors Rob Reich, Mehran Sahami, and Jeremy M. Weinstein were joined by GDS parent and moderator Kara Swisher (Louie '20, Alex '23) of the podcast Sway from the New York Times.

They discussed the problematic meaning of “connection” on social media platforms for Bit Tech companies, the value trade-off and societal goals of those platforms, the risks in valuing privacy over safety, the deliberate indifference of our democracy to regulate, and much more.
