At the end of January, more than 100 Middle and High School dancers performed a 90-minute, uninterrupted showcase, which told stories of social justice. The Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company contributed a solo performance by Christin Arthur as well as a video production of a dance tribute to the story of George Takei and his family’s internment in 1942. The development of the student dances with Felipe Oyarzun Moltedo, in partnership with Joan Ayap and Aleny Serna, followed class discussions of advocacy and activism with the students, who represented grades five through ten. Choreographed to tell a continuous narrative, each grade level contributed to the arc of the evening’s storytelling, at times deeply somber and elsewhere jubilant. Students leaped with grace, lifted and leaned on each other, and raised the bar for GDS Dance once again. Bravi tutti!
