Associate Head of School

Georgetown Day School opened its doors in 1945 as the first integrated school in a segregated city. Governed by a Board of Trustees elected by the parent body and administered by an appointed Head of School, it was founded by seven families who wanted to create a school committed not only to academic excellence and educational innovation but also to a value system emphasizing appreciation and respect for others. Believing that diversity was the ground out of which all deep and rich learning occurs, they established a school where all children would be welcome, celebrated, and challenged to be their best selves.
Today, the School's philosophy, programs, and position in the national educational landscape strongly reflect its roots. Having grown from 12 children in 1945 to 1075 students in PK-12 today, GDS is recognized as one of Washington, D.C.’s and the nation’s most dynamic educational institutions.

About the Position

Georgetown Day School seeks an Associate Head of School to begin July 2022. The Associate Head of School is the second in command to the Head of School and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of GDS. In this role, the AHOS frees up the Head to divide his time between high level and grass roots priorities, including strategic priorities and visioning on the one hand, and engagement with faculty and staff members, students, parents, and alumni on the other.

The Associate Head is the chief administrative officer of the school, inspiring other leaders of the school community to work together effectively to solve both routine and complex school issues and to move the leadership team forward strategically and collaboratively. The Associate Head of School is responsible for ensuring the implementation of the One GDS initiative, overseeing academic and programmatic articulation between and consistency and collaboration across all three divisions of the school. In addition to this specific implementation task, the AHOS is also responsible for managing implementation of other strategic initiatives, connecting program and operations, serving as a liaison with communications, and generally keeping the trains running on time in this large and complex institution. The AHOS is the point person for faculty hiring, onboarding, and retention school-wide, ensuring a pipeline of talented candidates aligned with the school’s mission and values.

Among the expectations for the Associate Head is that they will serve as a sounding board for other administrators, listening to and guiding them as appropriate with thoughtful questions and wise counsel. The AHOS will serve as a thought partner for the HOS and members of the leadership team. Above all, the Associate Head will live the mission of the school.

The successful candidate will be a seasoned independent school leader with significant academic experience. They will be highly organized, an exceptional communicator, and an empathetic listener, with high expectations for self and others, a strong public leadership presence, and a proven track record of successful project management. They will possess a growth mindset, deep caring, humility, passion for education, a sense of humor, and deep understanding and experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion.

In short, the ideal candidate will:

  • Be an outstanding manager of people and systems.
  • Be excellent at solving problems, resolving conflicts, and holding people accountable.
  • Be an expert in organizational management.
  • Have a strong academic background and a deep understanding of school life.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence and a growth mindset.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Possess the ability to become deeply attuned to the school’s culture, needs, and opportunities.
  • Have a proven track record of taking initiative that has led to successful outcomes.
  • Provide a strong, mission-aligned leadership presence.
  • Possess the skill to work collaboratively with and effectively lead a wide range of constituencies.
