GDS Quizbowl and History Bowl teams have delivered impressive performances recently. At the Richard Montgomery Spring Quizbowl Invitational, out of 22 teams competing, the GDS A team swept the field, going 10-0 to win first place. The GDS B team also played well amongst a strong field of competitors. Individually, Matt Siff ’20 placed second and Lyra Gemmil-Nexon ’22 placed third in scoring! This was the first time that GDS A had played at full strength this year and their performance moved them up to ninth in the nation.
Less than one week later, GDS also competed at the Johns Hopkins Winter Quizbowl Tournament. GDS A swept the field again, going 12-0 and defeating Richard Montgomery in a close finals match (360-300). GDS B went 4-7 and the 9th grade team had some strong victories. Individually, Matt Siff placed 2nd in scoring again.
The following day, GDS competed at the Regional History Bowl and Bee hosted by Centennial High School. GDS A finished 3rd in the Varsity Bowl and Arthur Delot-Vilain ’21 won the Varsity Bee!
High School history teacher Sue Ikenberry is a faculty advisor to many of GDS's academic competition clubs including Quizbowl and It's Academic. She noted that while the team's success is remarkable, it is also "very much the product of hard work and dedicated practice. GDS is definitely one of the best teams in the DMV, which is probably one of—if not the most competitive areas in the US. They have a very high national ranking and could well prove to be the best team in the country in subsequent National Tournaments."
Congratulations to all our Quiz and History Bowlers!
