Lower School Closing Ceremony

5th Graders are Ready to Leap
The GDS Lower School celebrated the end of the 2018-19 school year and the graduation of the 5th grade class to the Middle School on the last full day of school on June 6.

Fifth grade students (Corina Bellermann, Noa Henderson, Violet Ikenberry, Tatum Mach, Oliver Malkin, Angali Martin-Shanker, Alexander Solomon, and Henry Wachs) kicked off the ceremony by recounting their shared memories of their time together in the Lower School. As they went through highlights from each grade, current students in grades PK-4 connected with the speakers' reminiscences, whether it be of specific grade-level trips or favorite curricular units.

LS Principal Kimberly Beck and LS Assistant Principal Denise Jones spoke about all of this year’s exciting events and asked students to “make a connection” if students felt they had accomplished one of the following this year:
  • Learned something new
  • Made a new friend
  • Overcame a challenge
  • Were an ally or an upstander
  • Did something kind for someone else
  • Made the community a better place
There were a lot of hands in the air!

Two LS awards were also presented. Tatum Mach and Theo Foer received the Nathanial Kates Science Award, in recognition of their curious minds and experimental thinking. Anjali Martin-Shanker received the Ethan Alperstein Award, presented by Lois Alperstein, mother of Ethan, in honor of Ethan’s citizenship qualities that included leadership, loyalty, teamwork, and civility.

Head of School Russell Shaw told the 5th grade, “You are ready for Middle School!” as he shared how important their individual unique qualities are to the overall GDS community.

After receiving their certificates marking their graduation to the next division of GDS, 5th graders left the gymnasium dancing to Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’, chosen by the class to illustrate their unending positivity and hopefulness for tomorrow.

As the rest of the LS students exited, they shouted the Lower School chant:

I am ready to learn!
I am ready to explore!
I am ready to create!
I am ready to care!
Together we leap!
