Notes

There are a few little quirks in how this technology works.

  1. Things seem to work a little more smoothly if you use Internet Explorer (IE) as your web browser. It will work with Netscape Navigator. But, if you have both browsers on your computer use IE.

  2. If you have a very old browser on your PC or an older Mac, you may find that you can only view a document by saving it to your hard drive first. In this case, when you click on a link to view a document you will be prompted to save it to the hard drive of your computer in order to view it. Be sure to take note of the name of the document and where it is being saved. Once the document has been saved, open the appropriate program and then open the document.

  3. Some students will be asked to upload files into the Digital Drop Box (this feature will be used with some older students). If you are using a Mac or word processing application other than Microsoft Word, be sure to click "File," then "Save As," and save the document in Rich Text Format (RTF) before the document is uploaded. This will make it easier for the student to move this file between different types of computers.

  4. Make sure a file used at home that going into the digital drop box has been saved and closed before being uploaded to the digital drop box.

  5. Remember that you sign in with your child's password and login name in grades four - twelve.

  6. You can access the Online Hopper from the parent, student, or technology pages on the GDS main web site. Frequently asked questions are available at http://www.gds.org/technology/hopperfaq.cfm.
