GDS recently underwent an Energy and Environmental Audit with the renowned Stone House Group. This report will soon be available to all GDS members of the community. Much has already been accomplished at GDS; below is a sampling of recent achievements:
- Energy-use improvements include replacing light bulbs with energy-saving ones, installing remote energy accessibility, and initiating policies to reduce unnecessary energy usage.
- Paper management, including recycled products and recycling, double-sided printing, and paper usage policies as well as increasing reliance on electronic communications are already making a positive difference (parents are asked to ensure e-mail subscription addresses are current with the school in order to achieve our goal of reducing mailings and flyers to a minimum).
- Our synthethic turf athletic fields are primarily composed of recycled tires, obviating the need to water and apply chemicals to maintain grass.
- Our campus footprint has an excellent rating regarding space per student/faculty. And many green policies shaped decisions during the recent construction.
- GDS organizations such as the PSA have improved their green efforts by using recycled/recyclable disposables, incorporating green themes at Teacher Appreciation Luncheons and Comunity Service events, setting goals to reduce and reuse (when possible) party decorations, and sending some mailings and flyers via e-mail exclusively.
Much more will be available on this page of the Green Section upon completion of the Energy and Environmental Audit Report.
