HS Green Week
Monday, March 10 - Friday, March 14
The GDS Environmental Club hosted GDS's first ever "Green Week." The week raised awareness about environmental issues and the actions that we can take as individuals to lighten our footprint on the Earth. Each day had its own theme (waste, energy, global warming, etc.) and there were activities, movies, and challenges running throughout the week. As part of the week's activities, there is an ongoing cell phone recycling drive with collection points at both campuses. Please turn in your old cell phones — not only good for the environment, but the organization we are working with will pay us for the phones.
Throughout the week in the Internet Cafe:
- Calculate your carbon footprint
- Recycle your cell phone and other batteries
- Make your own notepad out of single-sided paper
- Adopt an endangered species
- Write your legislator about policy change
- T-shirt, chico bags and buttons for sale

Environmental Fair
Thursday, March 13
As part of the HS Green Week, the GDS Environmental Fair was held on Thursday, March 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the HS Forum. The keynote speaker was Mike Tidwell, executive director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. The idea of the fair was to learn more about environmental issues by talking with environmental activists, scientists and policy makers. The fair had approximately 15 booths staffed by groups including the Sierra Club Student Coalition, National Wildlife Federation, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, U-Think, Co-op America, Playpumps International, Casey Trees, Roots and Shoots, and others, as well as by GDS students and teachers. Topics ranged from composting to calculating your carbon footprint to writing your legislator or adopting an endangered species. Students inflated the tires of cars parked in the GDS lot and calculated the carbon and economic savings gained through proper tire inflation.
