Get Involved

There are several groups at GDS currently supporting the school "GO GREENER", including faculty, administration, and parent volunteers on the board and Parent Service Association. To improve cross-over communications, the PSA chair sits on both the Board's and the PSA's green committees and these committees are in communication with the Faculty's committee and the High School's Environmental Club.

If you are interested in environmental issues and are interested in helping support the school — and the GDS community — we'd love to hear from you!

Contact PSA Co-Chairs Marcia Miller at millermalhotra@aol.com or Pamela Reeves at pamelareeves@hotmail.com (also listed at the front of your GDS phone directory) for more information. They can help steer you to the right group, project or event.

Parents' Environmental Committees

Parents interested in supporting GDS in its green initiatives are encouraged to join the PSA Parents Green Committee or the Board's Environmental and Grounds Committee. Parents are also encouraged to become involved with special events held at GDS, such as Global Awareness Day, HS Eco-Festival, and Community Service.  Contact PSA Chairs for more information.

Green Community Service Events

During the year, the PSA's Community Service holds many events that Reuse and Recycle: in the fall there is a Used Coats Drive, a Used Halloween Costumes Drive and more. On a Saturday in April each year, GDS holds a Community Service Day for all families. The themes change, but in the past we have held a used bicycle recycling event, yard sale (reusing clothing etc.) and this year, we are sending gently-used Beanie Babies to send overseas along with care packages for soldiers (soldiers give the beanie babies to children they encounter on street patrol). We also hold park clean up days and other environmentally friendly events.

School Clubs

There are many opportunities for students to get involved and create new projects at GDS. Parents are also very supportive and involved in the forefront and background scenes. For example, parents helped the HS students and faculty with the 2007 HS Eco-Fair, providing contacts, help and support.  Watch the events page, and talk to your faculty to see how you can be involved.

Challenges!

There are many creative ideas afloat to help "challenge" GDS members of the community become greener from home and school. These "challenges" will be fun and supportive — and create opportunities for families to become involved with GDS in supporting the curriculum and citizenship. Check here for more updates — information will also be announced in our e-newsletters.
