Diversity at GDS
In the 9 years since Georgetown Days last looked at diversity at the School, much has changed in the scope of the discussion if not in the founder’s commitment to “honor the integrity and worth of each individual within a diverse school community.” This Spring 2008 issue examines this commitment: where it originated, where we are today, and what the future might hold.

GDS + GDS -- A photo essay of GDSers who met their match at (or after) school
A wedding announcement is always happy news to receive in the Alumni Office, and those with lots of GDS alumni in the photos are especially fun. When the bride AND the groom are GDSers, it’s spectacular. So once again, we sent out an e-mail, this time to collect GDS love stories. Responses ranged from short and sweet to detailed narratives, and everything in between. They are printed here as captions to some pretty wonderful photos.

It all began 60 years ago with Eleanor Roosevelt's friend Aggie O'Neil...
This is a year of celebration at GDS--of the success and accolades earned by our students, athletes, performers, and faculty; of our emerging new High School facilities; and certainly of our 60 years as a leader in innovative education. A look through the archives at GDS through the past six decades has brought laughter, pride, amazement, and even some tears.

Doing What They Love
GDS Alumni Make a World of Difference
This issue features the stories of GDS alumni who have chosen to “do good” in their professional lives (social work, community development, human services, and the like). Their career
paths have taken them around the world and close to home in finding ways to making the world a
better place.

Alumni Authors Amaze, Amuse & Illuminate
We sent out another of those e-mails fishing for alumni engaged in a particular field--in
this instance, writers--and netted a remarkable collection of essays on writing. The variety of responses from writers of research treatises to writers of romance was not surprising; the consistent appreciation for the critical instruction and support our alumni have for their teachers at GDS is certainly gratifying.

GDS and all that Dance
Dedication and hard work pay off for GDS's award-winning dancers
Dance at GDS has taken off with almost breathtaking speed. Barely a decade old, the program has become an important part of the school and the larger community as well. Parent and photographer Stephen Baranovics has captured the beauty of dance on film.

That Old College Try
a look at the college application process through the eyes of GDS counselors, students, and parents
Getting into college is more competitive, more expensive, and perhaps more stressful than at any time in history. On the bright side, many families credit the GDS college staff with getting them through the process not only in one piece, but with happy results. Here is Georgetown Days’ look at the college application process.

Science, an Art at GDS
Under the guidance of innovative and dedicated teachers, the science curriculum at Georgetown Day School appeals to biogeeks and poets alike. In Bill Wallace’s AP Bio class, students prepare to clone a fragment of viral DNA. Wallace, who came to GDS from a research position at the National Institutes of Health, has been cloning for years, but this bit of science is still a relative novelty in high school classrooms.

Passion Commitment Excellence
What makes GDS GDS
The focus of this edition of Georgetown Days is to attempt to capture the essence of GDS. In a sense, all editions attempt that task, but there is more deliberate intention this time. As a beginning, this edition points to some wonderful attributes of our GDS and its community.

GDS Online
Technology presents both opportunity and challenge for GDS. Because so much of learning and living must be done collaboratively to be successful, we must take care to maintain
face-to-face communication even as we take advantage of the flexibility
and reach that technological advances bring us.
