In spring 2001, several students of color from grades 4-12 came together in an effort to build community and to share their experiences as students at GDS. We are excited to continue this opportunity for our students.
This year's program, already underway, takes place from 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM once a month throughout the school year. During these sharing sessions, students openly discuss their experiences and concerns as students and as members of the GDS community. Students are organized into family groups, which combine students from different grade levels and at least one faculty member. Through whole group and family group activities, students have the opportunity to build a support network among their peers and create a forum in which they can share their thoughts and ideas. Students will also share their successes and accomplishments with one another, as well as learn how to use each other as resources in developing effective problem solving strategies. While GDS faculty and staff will facilitate the mentoring sessions, High School students will also have an active role as mentors. The High School students will share their insights and experiences, as well as assist in different activities.
Each mentoring session will run from 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM and will take place in the Middle School Lounge. There is no cost to participate. Snacks and drinks will be provided for each participant. If your child would like to participate and is in the After-School Program, they should go to After-School or Study Hall first, and then at 3:30 go to the MS Lounge for the Mentoring Program. If your child does not participate in ASP or Study Hall, they can go to the waiting room (room 405) in the Middle School until 3:30 and then go to the MS Lounge for the program.
If you would like your child to participate in the program please let us know by e-mailing Delancia Browing at dbrowning@gds.org or by calling the Diversity Office at 202-274-3203.
