9th Grade Diversity Seminar

What is the difference between prejudice and discrimination? How do media images influence how we see ourselves and other groups? What is internalized oppression? How can you be an ally?

These questions and more are tackled in the new 9th grade seminar, a class developed as an extension of the School's mission statement and as a part of the GDS Strategic Plan. All 9th graders attend one class a week for the first semester. The students complete readings and short journals to frame the discussion topic. Although assignments are graded, the real work happens outside of the classroom. By providing the students with the opportunity to discuss issues relating to ability, age, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status, we hope to encourage honest and open dialogue that will carry over throughout their time at GDS and throughout their lifetimes.
