 | The exciting and award-winning dance program at the LMS emphasizes the creative process, personal expression, and performance. Dance and expressive movement are integrated into the curriculum of the Lower and Middle School drama classes. In addition, students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades may choose to take a dance elective for their arts enrichment class. The 6th grade dance curriculum is "The History of Black Dance in America," in which students learn a variety of dance styles including Charleston, Improvisation, Swing, Modern and Hip-Hop. The 7th and 8th grades study Modern Dance, Choreography, Improvisation, and Performance. 8th grade dance students enjoy opportunities to perform with the HS dance troupe, Fata Morgana, at off-campus performances, and a regional dance festival. |
| The Dance program at the HS offers a diverse curriculum ranging from theater dance to ballet to modern dance. In each, students are introduced to choreographers who changed the shape of dance in that particular style. Along with technique, students learn dance history and research the roots of the different styles of dance. Frequent guest artists teach a wide variety of classes and professionals in pilates, floor barre, ballroom, and more, richly enhancing the High School dance students' experience. The student-run dance company, Fata Morgana (see next), provides an excellent opportunity for students to use their creativity and training to choreograph and perform. |
Dana Tai Soon Burgess: Artist-in-Residence Washington region’s premiere contemporary dance company, Dana Tai Soon Burgess & Co., is the dance artist-in-residence at Georgetown Day School. The company provides training and apprenticeships to advanced level GDS students, a Summer Dance Intensive for lower, middle and high school students, and classes for adults. In addition, Mr. Burgess provides choreographic opportunities for individual high school students and Fata Morgana, the student-run dance company at the High School. |
Fata Morgana: HS Dance Troupe Fata Morgana was founded in 1996 as a student-run and student-choreographed dance company at the GDS High School. The club is one of the largest at the High School, and it produces two concerts a year featuring student choreography and performances in a variety of dance styles including ballet, modern, hip hop, jazz, ballroom, belly dance, tap, Classical Indian, and Irish, working with HS dance teacher and choreographer Maria Watson. In addition, concerts have featured the work of notable guest choreographers including Dana Tai Soon Burgess, Patricia Golden, and Paul Gordon Emerson. In addition to producing concerts, Fata Morgana organizes other dance activities for the school including workshops, film events, field trips, and assemblies and represents GDS at the annual Washington Area Independent Schools Dance Education Association Festival. |

Patricia Golden is the 2012 Rosenfeld Master Dance Class Guest Artist
Patricia Golden has studied dance since childhood. She became a professional choreographer in her teens, choreographing regionally in the New York area and then in both union and non-union houses throughout the East Coast. Patricia jumped at the chance to work internationally at the Fringe Festival in Scotland where she choreographed several musicals. She created The Turnip Festival, an Off-Off-Broadway company, on New York's theater row, where she and fellow artists collaborated to develop and produce original works, garnering much acclaim by the New York Times. Mostly original works provided her many opportunities to perform, choreograph, and be seen on theater row in the city that never sleeps.
Patricia added ballroom instruction to her repertoire 15 years ago. She studied and trained through Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Florida where she competed in competitions and showcases throughout the regional area. She continued her training a various independent studios, eventually opening her own company, Swing-By Ballroom Dance. Patti recently moved to Maryland and found a home where she could practice her first love, teaching, at That’s Dancing Ballroom and Dancesport Center in Jessup, owned by Carlos Pabon. She has performed with Carlos (pictured) and with her students here for the last three years in various showcases. She still teaches tap at dance schools from Maryland to Virginia and choreographs and directs at local venues when her schedule permits. Currently she is preparing her students for the Baltimore Dance Challenge to be held early in 2012. She will offer instruction at GDS in both Latin and Swing dancing, a perfect preparation for the GDS spring musical, Guys & Dolls. |
