In all areas of school life, Georgetown Day School is dedicated to providing a supportive educational atmosphere in which teachers challenge the intellectual, creative, and physical abilities of high school students while fostering a strength of character and a concern for others. The college application process is filled with both challenges and opportunities. Students and parents weather intense pressures - some genuine, some media-fed. We, the GDS College Counseling Staff, firmly believe that there are no best colleges, only colleges that are best for individual students.

GDS has two full time and one part-time college counselors with extensive college admissions experience. We have the luxury of providing juniors and seniors with individual attention and counseling throughout the college process. We enjoy getting to know the students and relish the opportunity to watch them grow during this exciting time.

Bobby Asher College Counselor

Barbara Bergman has over twenty years of experience working in university admissions. Prior to GDS, Barbara was Associate Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Georgetown University for fifteen years. In that capacity, she directed many aspects of the undergraduate recruitment and admissions process, chaired admissions committees, coordinated special scholarships, and presented admissions and financial aid workshops to alumni and high school groups. She currently serves on the National Merit Corporation Advisory Board and previously was on the faculty of the College Board Summer Institute on International Admissions. Barbara received her B.A. from Colgate University and her M.A. from George Washington University.

Christopher Miller began his independent school experience as a high school student at the George School in Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. from Oberlin College and brings to GDS strong experience in college admissions as well as a breadth of knowledge regarding programs and issues surrounding multicultural students. Chris's admissions experience began while an undergraduate at Oberlin where he worked as a senior intern in the admissions office, interviewing freshman and transfer applicants. He furthered enhanced his commitment to working with students through summer positions with Summerbridge and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. After graduating from college, Chris joined the Dickinson College admissions staff first as an Admissions Counselor and then as an Assistant Director. His position at Dickinson included traditional admissions responsibilities as well as multicultural recruitment and programming.

Bobby Asher has been teaching in the History Department at GDS for fifteen years. In addition to his classroom responsibilities, he has coached both varsity men's baseball and women's basketball and served as a class dean. A native Washingtonian, he graduated from St. Albans and earned his B.A. from The University of Virginia, where he majored in history. Over the years, he has participated in and overseen numerous programs, including SummerStart, the Reader's Digest Scholarship Program, the Student Staff Council and the Horn of Africa Program. Bobby has also participated in the Harvard Institute on College Admissions and currently splits his time between the GDS College Counseling Office and teaching. He has three daughters who are students at GDS.
