Hiring Procedures

Faculty and Staff Application Process

To maintain consistency and equity in the recruitment process, a standard procedure for application for positions needs to be followed. As a result, anyone not currently on staff applying for a position of any type at the school should complete Georgetown Day's Application for Employment. The application will be sent to the Director of Studies, who will record the inquiry, send a letter of acknowledgment to the applicant, and, if warranted, forward a copy of the file to the Principal or Department Chair responsible for the position. That Principal or Chair will maintain contact with applicant. When a final decision has been made, the successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified by the appropriate supervisor. The original file of the new employee will be sent to the Head of the School so that a contract can be drawn up, a permanent personnel file established, and all necessary government forms completed.

When openings for any position in the School arise, the Principal responsible should notify the Director of Studies who will advertise the position on the School's e-mail system, the School's website, and through the appropriate outside channels. Current Georgetown Day School teachers wishing to pursue another position opening within the School should notify their Division Principal and the Director of Studies. In-house candidates for teaching positions in another division will be expected to teach a demonstration class in that division and will also be observed teaching within their own division by the administrator or department chair responsible for the opening. While all consideration possible will be extended to in-house candidates, numerous factors influence final hiring decisions including extracurricular needs of the School.

Nondiscrimination Policy

Georgetown Day School does not discriminate on the basis of gender, age, marital status, race, religion national origin or ethnic origin or sexual orientation in the hiring or retaining of staff. In addition, GDS makes every effort to comply with all governmentally mandated regulations applicable to independent schools including, but not limited to, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1991.

Faculty Hiring Procedures

Georgetown Day School annually receives many solicited and unsolicited applications for faculty positions. The Director of Studies coordinates the School's response to these inquiries, meets with interested candidates, and tracks applications through the hiring process. When openings exist, the Director of Studies forwards relevant resumés to the appropriate Divisional Principals or Department Chairs who then supervise the recruitment process in their division or department. As much as possible, department and/or team members are involved in interviewing and observing prospective teachers. All candidates will be asked to teach a class. The Division Principal then obtains formal or informal comments from the faculty and Department Chairs before making a recommendation to the Head of School. Final hiring decisions and the setting of salaries are the prerogative of the Head of School who has overall responsibility for school employees.

When recommending that individuals apply for employment at GDS, current faculty should be careful not to give applicants any particular assurance other than that their candidacy is being considered. Because many considerations go into the definition of a particular position, well-qualified individuals in some aspects may ultimately be eliminated as the search proceeds. It is the School's goal to notify them as soon as possible, but when a search is ongoing it may also not be possible to make a decision on the best candidate until all the candidates have been seen.

Like the admissions process, the hiring process affects public relations even, or especially, when someone does not receive the job. Because GDS wants to be sensitive to individuals throughout the process, care should be taken not to give mixed or confusing messages to candidates. Therefore, it is appropriate to refer candidates who desire to know the status of their application to the Director of Studies or the Divisional Principal. Furthermore, the School strives to be discreet and professional about candidate inquiries and applications, including all acceptances and rejections.

Georgetown Day School's offer of a contract to a job applicant is contingent upon submission by the applicant of a completed Application for Employment and, in the case of faculty, the receipt of official college and graduate school transcripts.
